The department of urology, andrology and kidney transplantation of Bordeaux University Hospital treats adult women and men with diseases of the kidney, the bladder, the prostate, the urethra and the genital organs. It manages all urological cancers, in women as in men, as well as urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse in women and bladder disorders of neurological origin (neuro-urology). It also performs the hospital’s adult kidney transplants. It follows patients from the first outpatient appointment through to the review that comes after treatment.

Everything is on one site: the department occupies the eleventh floor of the Tripode building, at Pellegrin Hospital, in Bordeaux, and the clinics, the wards, the day-case unit and the operating theatres are all there.
How care is organised
Four settings, one team. Which of them applies to you is decided at the consultation, with you.
Outpatient clinic
The first appointment establishes the situation, the investigations that are needed and the options that are open. Most tests are carried out during that visit or on the same site.
Day-case surgery
Many operations are done without a night in hospital, when the procedure and the patient’s situation allow it: you come in and go home the same day.
Inpatient care
When a stay is needed, the admission, the stay itself and the discharge are prepared in advance and explained beforehand.
The operating theatre
Endoscopy, laser, laparoscopy and robot-assisted surgery are used according to what the operation requires.
A coordinated pathway
- Understanding the situation
The consultation brings together the information that matters and defines the medical question.
- Choosing a strategy
The options are compared, taking account of the disease, of general health and of the patient’s own priorities. Cancer cases are discussed in a multidisciplinary team meeting.
- Preparing the treatment
Investigations, anaesthetic and the arrangements for the stay are organised according to the treatment chosen.
- Organising the follow-up
Discharge instructions, results and review appointments are explained to the patient.
A university hospital department
Being part of a university hospital means three things at once, and the same doctors do all three.
Care
Personalised management, from everyday urology to complex cases referred by other hospitals.
Advancing treatment
Evaluating innovations and taking part in clinical research, so that practice improves.
Teaching
Passing on knowledge and surgical technique to the health professionals of tomorrow.
This page describes the department in general terms. What is proposed to any one patient depends on their medical situation and on the instructions given by the team. The French-language site sets out each step in detail: le service.
